Ping-Pong Prodigies

Kick off the school year by signing up for a new club: ping-pong! Armon Mobasher, a senior, with the help of Mr. Raper, the physics teacher, founded the fresh new team. While the concept of a table tennis team is a bit unexpected and even a little strange to some, the team has assembled more than thirty students that are interested in the new competitive sport.

Armon says, “After the first week of the club, we already have over thirty members!”

When asked about it, the team captain replies “ …this is the flagship year and it’s a club where we play ping pong.”

How do you join? Just ask Mr. Raper, the teacher contact, about the club. They meet every Tuesday in the afternoon. Right now, the club is still inexperienced since it’s the first of its kind here at Bob Jones. The founder of the team mentioned possibilities of hosting ping-pong tournaments or attending other games later in the school year. However, new tournaments have not been officially decided yet. The team has even considered ideas for the designs of the official table tennis t-shirts.

Vincent Rettke, a table tennis member, has described the sport as “a mini version of tennis” and expressed that it is “fun.”

Table tennis is one of the most over-looked sports in the Olympics. The Daily Beast describes it as “America’s most underdog sport.” However, you can catch national and international updates since it has its own division on the Team USA website, listing different events and tournaments.

Though the ping-pong club has recently been assembled, it has a strong start: “ It’s going to be a pretty fun club and I’m excited,” writes Armon. Feel free to contact Mr. Raper or Armon Mobasher for any further information regarding this club.
