Breakfast Buddies: Making Breakfast the Most Important Meal of the Day

Galli Farr and Kinley Bragg

Several students at Bob Jones have been spending their mornings productively.  Breakfast Buddies is a mentoring program where Bob Jones students spend time with the elementary kids in Madison.

It’s more than just having some good company during a meal.  Mentoring programs are beneficial to both parties.  High school students learn how to be responsible role models, and elementary students learn to see role models in everyday life, not just on TV or in the movies.

“Some children need the adult bonds,” Ms. Lambert said. Our principal herself was at West Madison Elementary participating in Breakfast Buddies program recently.

How does a student get involved, and what does it entail? The easiest way to get involved is to be on a team or in a club already involved in the program.  Football and cheerleading already visited several Madison Elementary Schools as did FCA.  Teams and clubs are assigned to a school, and then students drive or carpool there before 7:05 AM.  They eat and socialize with the children from 7:05 AM to 7:40 AM before making their way back to Bob Jones.

The kids just eat up the attention along with their breakfasts, and these Bob Jones student leaders become role models not just to elementary students but to all of us.
