After a long day at school, how do you spend your time?  Maybe you should consider joining Smash Club.  It meets on Thursdays after school in the Media Center.

In the late school year of 2014-2015, Mrs. Husky, the Media Center Specialist, assembled a new club: Smash Club. She made the club due to the raising popularity of the new released game Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U console.  The game is a fighting game that has several Nintendo characters including Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Link from The Legend of Zelda series, and many others that aren’t even in the Nintendo world, such as Sonic the Hedgehog or the famous Mega Man.

Mrs. Huskey said, “It started out with just a few students who asked if they could bring their gaming systems and play Mario Smash Bros. after school. Before long, there were over 20 kids gaming in the Media Center. I think that one reason the club grew so fast was the need to have a little fun. While I’m all for academic clubs (I sponsor a couple of those, too), I believe it’s vital to our students’ mental well being to have a place where they can just hang out and have fun. With homework and studying, projects and tests, teens can easily become overwhelmed and stressed out. And gaming is a great way to destress after a tough day at school.”

Dylan Desrochers, a senior from Bob Jones High School, stated that most of the characters that are chosen are “usually the top tier characters.”  He also mentioned that a senior named Quan Nguyen is the overall champ of the club. Others have mentioned that he beat a college student in a game.

Whatever they may do in this club, it is a great way for kids of every grade to come together and participate in a fun activity. Every Thursday after school, it is their time to show each other what they can do, virtually.
