Debate team consists of one or more students convincing a judge that his or her opinion on how to solve a problem is the better resolution to solve the said problem. With six competitive events as stated here, debate team uses a variety of skills helpful for students in their everyday lives.

Last year, Bob Jones debate team won an all expense-paid trip to New York to compete in an international competition while holding title of being the only high school in America with two teams in the semi-finals.

This year, the team recently debated in Birmingham, Montgomery, and Jackson. The chosen topic was reparations as it related to slavery. Currently, they are preparing for a debate in November researching a current nationwide issue for the Public Forum. That issue is as follows: In response to the current crisis, a government should prioritize the humanitarian needs of refuges over its national interest.

After the team’s latest competition, Ms. Farris stated, “Hands down, our debate team is the best not only in North Alabama, but in the state. Expect some big things from them this year. Our team is stacked with the brightest minds.”

What can students learn from debate team? The fear of public speaking, (glossophobia), is a fear that affects 74% of Americans, and is also one of the many skills being taught in debate team. Other skills include researching, self-confidence, being goal-oriented and listening skills. Kayla Buckelew said, “I think we have a good balance of working really hard and enjoying ourselves.”

“Speech and debate gives students a voice. It’s a wonderful feeling to see your students holding leadership roles at school. Regardless if they qualify for state or national tournaments, just seeing them excel and having self-confidence is amazing.”
