Enlistment and You

Enlistment+and+You

For many Bob Jones seniors, graduation is rapidly approaching. With graduation comes the end of our high school career, and the foray into life after high school. To many this means college, but for a select group of Bob Jones students, this means enlistment into the United States Military.

Enlistment carries a somewhat negative stigma, especially in an area like Madison where a college pathway seems to take precedence over the military or workforce. Those who choose the path of enlistment might feel looked down upon. Many who are choosing this path see it as their obligation to dispel the negative rumors that surround enlistment. “The negative stigma around enlisting is ridiculous. Enlisting is a valid path to be successful due to the sheer amount of jobs available,” said senior BJ Burrows, who plans on enlisting in the Air Force after graduation. The military is more than just battlefields. “Most jobs available to recruits teach skills demanded throughout the workforce,” added Burrows.

While it isn’t for everyone, enlistment can lead to great success in life. That’s the case for Private First Class Alex Bartholomae, a former Bob Jones student who joined the Marine Corps last year. “Enlistment in the Marine Corps really sets me up to be successful in the civilian world,” said Bartholomae. “I have already proven that I can handle the challenges that are laid down in front of me and also be able to handle the stress that comes with the challenges.”

Enlistment, for some, can also be used as a path to a further education. For Bob Jones Senior Ethan Mawhirter, who plans to join the Air Force after graduating, that’s the case. “Honestly, the reason I want to go into the Air Force is college isn’t for me right now, but I see the Air Force as a means of getting an education later in life.”

To any Bob Jones Student interested in a military career, don’t hesitate to contact or visit the local Madison area recruiters. Treat the interaction like a simple conversation. Recruiters will teach you about their branch and lay out the opportunities that it can bring you.

Remember, under no circumstances are you obligated to sign anything or make any commitments. A simple conversation  can lead to a lifetime career of greatness!

Students can sign up to take the ASVAB with Mrs. Champion in the College and Career Counseling Center.
