2019 is shaping up to be an exciting year for film.

2018 is behind us, and while it gave us many wonderful things in the world of entertainment, 2019 will take it a step further. Now, the film lineup in 2019 is something to be excited for! There are new movies for everyone to enjoy this year, from Disney remakes to action to sci-fi and everything in-between!

For superhero movie buffs, strap in, because 2019 is going to be a wild ride with all the new movies coming out this year. Marvel Cinematic Universe fans will be riding an emotional roller coaster. The stellar introduction of “Captain Marvel” on March 8th is sure to wow fans, and soon following will be the resolution to the devastating cliffhanger of “Avengers: Infinity War” with “Avengers: Endgame”. Peter Parker will also swing back on screen in “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, this time facing his longtime nemesis, Mysterio. For DC fans, Billy Batson adds a kid-friendly perspective to the DCEU in “Shazam” on April 6th, and Joaquin Phoenix’s “Joker” flick comes out in October, telling an origin story for the Clown Prince of Crime. The reworking of the “X-Men” franchise opens the doors for a second attempt at adapting the Phoenix Saga when “Dark Phoenix” opens on June 7th, and the “X-Men” spin-off “The New Mutants” is opening August 2nd.

The steady stream of live-action remakes of Disney’s animated classics hits an all-time high this year with three adaptations hitting the big screen this spring and summer. “Dumbo”, starring Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton, flies into theaters on March 29th. Will Smith’s new take on Genie is sure to make headlines when the new “Aladdin” hits theaters on May 24th. Over summer break, continue your problem-free philosophy with “The Lion King”’s return to theaters. Beyoncé and Donald Glover are slated to play Nala and Simba with James Earl Jones reprising his legendary role as Mufasa (prep the tissues folks, I’m sure the death scene will be even more traumatizing in live-action).

The Walt Disney Company is not the only studio hoping to jump onto the live-action adaptation train, as films for Pokémon and Sonic the Hedgehog are getting the CGI character treatment this summer. “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu” stars “Deadpool” actor Ryan Reynolds as the voice of the beloved character. If you’re curious to see what that will look like, the trailer has been uploaded to YouTube. As for the Blue Blur, SEGA’s film adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog will star “Parks and Recreation” veteran Ben Schwartz in the titular role while Jim Carrey stands as his nemesis Doctor Robotnik.

As for new animated films coming this year, Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” will allegedly find Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and company searching far and wide to find the toys Andy discarded over the years (focusing on Wheezy and Bo Peep) to reunite them with Bonnie’s toy box. The veterans from the franchise’s twenty-year history will reprise their roles with Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele joining the mix. Other beloved franchises getting a sequel this year include “The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part” and “How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World”, both scheduled to release in February. Disney hopes to cash in on the “Frozen” franchise again when Anna and Elsa return to the big screen in “Frozen 2” over Thanksgiving weekend.

Fans of science-fiction rejoice as several reboots of beloved and iconic franchises make their tales anew. The reboot of “Men in Black” turns over a new leaf, adding “Creed” actress Tessa Thompson as the series’ first female agent. She and Chris Hemsworth (“Thor: Ragnarok” reunion, yay!) lead the sequel series, being sure not to completely mind-wipe the original series when it opens June 14th. This April, the “Hellboy” franchise restarts, with “Stranger Things” actor David Harbour wielding the Right Fist of Doom. Another long-running series stomps towards theaters this year in “Godzilla: King of Monsters”. The ambitious reboot of the kaiju films of the 1950s sees every monster to ravage Tokyo against the iconic beast. Fans of the revolutionary films should rejoice to see how modern film technology will affect the renowned monsters.

Meanwhile, in a galaxy far, far away, the sequel trilogy of the beloved “Star Wars” franchise comes to its epic conclusion. Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, and BB-8 might finally thwart the malicious intent of Kylo Ren and the First Order. Many key elements to the series’ future were alluded to in the trilogy’s first entry, “The Force Awakens”, but were ultimately ignored by the divisive “The Last Jedi”. Episode IX has a lot on its plate, but rest assured as sci-fi powerhouse J.J. Abrams is back at the helm of the story he started.

These films will touch the lives of many fans around the world, as well as breaking some of their hearts, no doubt bringing joy and happiness to everyone who sees them on the big screen. Almost everyone from every genre of film is awaiting these new movies to come in 2019, so let’s hope they can deliver.
