Drama takes center stage this fall.

The drama program’s big fall event is in full swing. Each year the program competes in the Trumbauer Competition, first in the district and then, if they win there, on to state. Each student has the opportunity to compete in an individual event (IE) from acting to costuming.

Even though the competition usually occurs later in the fall, those competing prepare early to get everything done in time. As stated by Megan Zechar in a previous Patriot Pages article, “The actors in Advanced Production work for weeks and weeks, perfecting and correcting before a performance under the watchful eyes of Mr. Craft, Mrs. Davis, and their student directors.”  The same can be said of the rest of the program.

Brenna Kilpatrick, a costumer, said, “I have a lot of work to do still, from taking notes for my project, to creating the project. For a costuming IE there’s a lot of details to take care of.”

Other IEs are being prepared or polished for competition up until the day. The acting portion has many categories from contemporary duets, to pantomime. Nathan Swikco is performing a pantomime about recent events regarding hurricanes Irma and Harvey, following the story of a man who lost his home during a storm, and is one to look out for. Others are on different stages. One of the biggest parts of competing is finding the piece that works best for you. Shelby Kilpatrick, one half of a duo performing a classical acting duet, said that her particular category takes a lot of effort just to find a good one, especially for two girls.

The one act, however, is where a lot of the focus of the program lies. “I am so excited for everyone to see the new amazing one act for this year!!! I am so happy to be a part of it and know it will turn out great!” actor Shelby Kilpatrick said.

If you want to support the drama program, there is one easy way: Drama Fest. A mini version of the competition in our home court. It is the biggest drama event of the year, according to Mrs. Davis. Students can see all areas of of the program, from the beginning class to the advanced and the one act as a finale.

Drama Fest is on Thursday, November 2nd, 6:30pm. Tickets are $5 at the door. If you want to see the actual competition Bob Jones is hosting this year all day on Saturday November 4th.
